The Night My Kitchen Whispered
�It began as a faint hum in the night, barely perceptible at first. It drifted in through the opening beneath the kitchen door while I was half asleep. There was a problem.
With a racing heart, I sat up. Somewhere behind walls I'd never really noticed, the hum became louder and was accompanied by a slight drip. With a torch in hand and perspiration trickling down my brow despite the air conditioner running,
I tiptoed down the hall. In the kitchen, the washbasin steadily leaked as though it were screaming, and the exhaust hood rattled so violently it seemed to be alive. My thoughts were racing: spirit, ghost, or machine?
There was no phantom when I eventually worked up the nerve to open the lid and look. No soul. Only damaged components: a leaky hoodAn overworked air conditioner struggling in the desert heat and a leaking pipe.
I let out a breath. Remorse mixed with relief.
